The Principles of Learning

This interactive session is based on three books: 1) How Learning Workshop: Seven Research-based Principles for Smart Teaching by Susan Ambrose, et al. 2) Teaching at Its Best: A Research-Based Resource for College Instructors by Susan Nilson, and 3) Why Don't Students Like School? A Cognitive Scientist Answers Questions About How the Mind Works and What It Means for the Classroom by Daniel Willingham. Participants will learn about several learning principles and how to apply them to teaching. The principles address students' prior learning and motivation, course organization and climate, mastery learning, providing feedback, and encouraging self-directed learning.
