COMING IN NOVEMBER: INFORMATION SESSIONS ABOUT NAVIGATING YOUR WAY TO A FULBRIGHT
If you are interested in pursuing a Fulbright Fellowship for international research and teaching, attend one of these interactive sessions during which we'll discuss navigating the Fulbright website, coordinating your Fulbright application with the UCF sabbatical application process, and other strategies to maximize your chances of success. PROPOSALS INVITED FOR UCF INFORMATION FLUENCY CONFERENCE 2014
This year’s conference will be held February 26 & 27, 2014. The theme is "The Age of New Media: Literacy in the 21st Century." Submit your proposal online by November 24, 2013, at http://www.ce.ucf.edu/asp/cfp_if2014/ . What is new media? Why is the concept of new media worthy of an academic discussion? What are the effects of new media on literacy, particularly within higher education? In what ways can we focus on interdisciplinary approaches to information fluency?
UCF CARES: WORKSHOPS FOR FACULTY LED BY STUDENT DEVELOPMENT AND ENROLLMENT SERVICES
Starting a conversation with a student in distress can be difficult. Come learn how to help build a culture of care. These workshops will cover key indicators and provide talking points when working with students struggling with day-to-day challenges. The next workshop is Wednesday, November 13th, from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm Student Union 220. INTERESTED IN TEACHING FOR LEAD?
Adjunct Instructors will have the opportunity to teach 1st and 2nd year LEAD Scholars and Leadership Studies Minor and Certificate students. Using the Social Change Model of leadership, instructors will develop students' leadership knowledge and skills as well as increase their awareness of personal values and integrity. STEM ED READING GROUP FALL MEETINGS
The STEM Ed Reading Group will be reading the book How People Learn, which connects research about the brain and learning theory into classroom actions and practices. If you haven’t already, you will soon hear that UCF is applying for reaffirmation of our Carnegie Foundation Community Engaged Classification. In 2008 our university was among the first in the country to secure this honor, and I’m happy to be part of a team of people from across campus who are working on our application to maintain our status. Team members will be contacting faculty, students, staff, and administrators across campus to request a variety of information, but I would like to make a specific request of those of you who are reading this message. If you are a faculty member who has “ not only incorporated community-based teaching and learning into courses, but turned that activity into research to improve teaching and learning through the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), i.e., publishing articles, making presentations, conducting studies of their courses, conducting workshops, etc.” would you please contact me to share some details of your efforts? We want to highlight as many faculty members who have done this kind of work as possible. The team and I will also be collecting data and details about a wide range of community-based research activities, so if you conduct collaborative research in the community, please send me your contact info so I can arrange a time to discuss it with you. If you’re not sure if your work fits this category, I can provide more info if you reach out to me. 2013 FLORIDA BOOK AWARDS COMPETITION NOW OPEN; DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS DEC. 2, 2013
Established in 2006 and now the most comprehensive state book awards program in the nation, the contest recognizes and celebrates the year’s best books penned by full-time residents of the Sunshine State, with the exception of submissions to the Florida Nonfiction and Visual Arts categories, whose authors may live elsewhere. The contest categories include General Fiction, Young Adult Literature, Children’s Literature, Florida Nonfiction, Poetry, Popular Fiction, Visual Arts, Spanish Language, and the recently added category for General Nonfiction. Entries, which can be submitted by anyone (e.g. publisher, author or literary agent), must have both an original copyright date between Jan. 1, 2013, and Dec. 31, 2013, and an International Standard Book Number (ISBN). Applicants are encouraged to submit their books into competition any time after the competition is launched, and as soon as possible after books are officially published. All entries must be received no later than 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, 2013 (this is not a postmark deadline). FACULTY WRITING CLUB FALL 2013
Join a faculty writing club to start your semester off with a focus on productivity and camaraderie. Having trouble getting into a good writing rhythm? Need to get away from your office to get a change of perspective and a little privacy? Forget the coffee shop--join your colleagues on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in FCTL for a loosely structured writing session. We'll take five or six minutes each week to go around the room and state a goal for the time block and then spend the rest of the time working on our individual projects. Bring your own laptop or use an FCTL computer. And of course there will be coffee. Everyone is welcome!
