Attached is the RFP for the 2012 Winter Faculty Development Conference, which is due this Friday (November 9). Please also note the attached Pride Faculty and Staff November newsletter. Starting today we’ll be including a weekly teaching tip in this post. If you have an idea or a piece of information that can be summarized in just a sentence or two and might be of interest and value to colleagues, please send it to me. Have a great week!

This week’s tip: If you assign timed presentations or group activities in your classes, check out Kennesaw State University’s class timer tool at this URL: Projecting this timer on the screen during class can help to keep students on task and allow you to concentrate on being an instructor rather than a timekeeper.

As the time for the campus migration to a new Learning Management System draws near, the Center for Distributed Learning is offering a number of faculty development workshops. You can check out the schedule at this URL:

Student veterans are a unique group on the UCF campus. Along with an array of positive characteristics, student veteran face a number of unique challenges. To better serve the student veterans on campus, the Orlando Veterans Affairs Medical Center and UCF have partnered to host the VA’s VITAL Initiative. This program places VA mental health staff on the UCF campus to conduct outreach to student veterans, provide mental health services to the student veterans, and provide education about veterans’ needs to the staff and faculty. Dr. Bryan Batien is joining the UCF team as the VITAL coordinator. He earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and has been with the VA for almost two years. He is also an Iraq combat veteran and brings a combination of professional and real life experience to this position. FCTL will be hosting a series of meet and greet sessions with Dr. Batien over the next few weeks. Please stop by and find out how this partnership can help you in your work with student veterans. The first session is this Tuesday at 10 a.m. in CL1 207.

During International Week, "Russian Culture Night" will be held on Wednesday, November 14 from 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm at the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning. The event will feature Russian food and two presentations:

  • "The Education Controversy: New Russian Law on Education". New legislation in Russia, scheduled to be implemented before the end of the 2012, is expected to result in drastic changes in the country's education system. These changes will affect all educational levels, from pre-schools to universities, with foreseeable reforms in both the schooling and school funding of such institutions. (Dr. Alla Kourova)
  • "Ukraine's experience in the creative implementation of the ideas of the Bologna Process". ( Dr. Tatiana Norman)

Interested in STEM education but need motivation to keep up with the research? The STEM Education Research Reading Group will meet three times this semester to discuss and reflect on the National Research Council’s 2012 publication titled "Discipline-Based Education Research: Understanding and Improving Learning in Undergraduate Science and Engineering." Requested by the National Science Foundation, this publication looks across physics, chemistry, biology, the geosciences and astronomy to: 1) synthesize empirical research on undergraduate teaching and learning in the sciences; 2) examine the extent to which the research currently influences undergraduate science instruction; and 3) describe the intellectual and material resources that are required to further develop discipline-based education research.

The UCF Center for Success of Women Faculty invites you to our 4th presentation in our Successful Women seminar series. "Using Virtual Reality to Treat Real Fears and Anxiety" – Deborah C. Beidel, Ph.D., ABPP, Professor of Clinical Psychology, Director Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology and UCF Anxiety Disorders Clinic
Twenty-five years of research has demonstrated that exposure therapy is the most effective treatment for anxiety disorders, including social phobia and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). The core of this treatment entails coming into contact with the feared object, event or situation. The challenge for therapists is to be able to "engineer" that exposure so that the proper elements of the fear are presented. How does one arrange exposure to an airplane in bad weather? An auditorium full of disapproving listeners? A HUMV explosion in Iraq? Virtual reality has become a valuable tool to allow exposure to occur in optimal fashion. In this presentation, Dr. Beidel will discuss how the UCF Anxiety Disorders Clinic is using virtual reality in clinical research activities to develop more effective interventions for the treatment of anxiety disorders in adults and children.

The Center for Success of Women Faculty and FCTL are pleased to announce are co-hosting a Fall 2012 book club featuring "Women Don’t Ask: Negotiation and the Gender Divide" by L. Babcock and S. Laschever (Princeton University Press; ISBN 0-691-08940-X). This is an important study of how women can become their own best advocates by knowing how to ask for exactly what they want in their public and private lives. Everyone welcome (even if you haven’t read the book)!

Join a faculty writing club to start your fall semester off with a focus on productivity and camaraderie. Having trouble getting into a good writing rhythm? Need to get away from your office to get a change of perspective and a little privacy? Forget the coffee shop--join your colleagues on Thursday and Friday mornings from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in FCTL for a loosely structured writing session. We'll take five or six minutes each week to go around the room and state a goal for the time block and then spend the rest of the time working on our individual projects. Bring your own laptop or use an FCTL computer. And of course there will be coffee. Everyone is welcome!
